It’s the attack of the vinyl shower curtains

June 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Did anyone see the LA Times story about the health risks of vinyl shower curtains? Scary stuff. Apparently, the beasties emit toxic chemicals in high enough concentrations that they could cause damage to the central nervous, respiratory and reproductive systems. Seven of the chemicals, including toluene, ethylbenzene, phenol, methylisobutyl ketone, xylene, acetophenone and cumene are considered hazardous air pollutants by the EPA. In addition, phthlatates, organtoins and vinyl chloride (part of PVC), are also commonly used in or on vinyl shower curtains. Yikes!
